“Back to School Silhouettes” Resin Pendant
Designed by Michael Jack Putman

*Warning- This project makes reference to a resin based project. I recommend you read any and all MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) and warning labels on any product that you use. I also suggest that you always mix and pour your resin in a well ventilated area. Wear gloves and cover your work area.

Materials:
Silhouettes of youth image

Amate Studio’s Copper Jumbo Square

 Blending Foam

Distress Ink-Walnut Stain

K & Company-“Life’s Journey” Dictionary Scrapbook Page on Vellum

Alumilite Crystal Clear Resin (Found at most Hobby Stores)

Modge Podge

Tools:
Scissors

Brushes

Heat Gun

Instructions:

·        Cut your image of youth and vellum to the size of the Jumbo Square.  Apply Distress ink to sides of image with blending foam. To add a little shadow of color and age.

·        Then prepare your image of youth with a coat of Modge Podge on both sides.

·        Apply a layer of Modge Podge to the top of your youth image. Then adhere your piece of vellum. Burnish vellum and image. Apply Modge Podge to your pendant and then burnish your image and vellum into your pendant. Apply another coat of Modge Podge to the top and sides of your image. Let dry.

·        You are now ready for resin. Mix your batch of resin (Follow the directions on your resin packaging) and pour. You will need to pour twice to achieve a nice domed top.

·        Your resin’s dry time will vary depending on the brand and also your location and weather.

  • Once dry. Ready to wear.

Back to School Pendant
by Sam Katz

Supplies Needed:

Amate Studios Designer Collection House Pendant in any finish.
About 1/4 block of red (or any dark color) polymer clay. I used Fimo Soft clay for this project.
Either a clay dedicated pasta machine or acrylic roller
A small piece of 28 guage craft wire.
A straight tissue or clay blade
“Dress It Up” brand “Pencil Box” themed buttons for craft-available at Michael’s
Wire cutters
Lisa Pavelka’s Magic Glos (either sunshine or a UV nail light) & heat gun - optional
Glue (any cyano-acrylate will do)
1 small smooth ceramic tiles.(these are actually smooth white bathroom or kitchen tiles & can be found  inexpensively at places like Home Depot).

Instructions: (please read all instructions once through before starting)

1. Condition your clay.If you are not familiar with conditioning polymer clay, you can go to: http://www.artjewelrymag.com/art/Default.aspx?c=a&id=755 for a short video.(You will need to create a free account, but it is fast & easy)

2. Run your conditioned clay through your pasta machine on a setting that will give you a sheet approximately 1/8” thickor roll with your acrylic roller to a uniform 1/8” thickness. Placing a stack of playing cards with an equal number ofcards on either side of your clay will help you make a uniformly thin sheet (in this case about 4 cards). You will only need about a 3” x 3” sheet.

3. Place your pendant face down on your clay & press gently to make an impression of the space you want to fill.

4. Trim with your clay blade to the exact shape of the pendant.

5. Place trimmed clay into the pendant & smooth clay edges to the sides of the pendant.

6. Choose which of the buttons you want to use (there are 10 -- I chose the paper, pencil, chalk board & used my wire cutters to cut a small piece of the ruler.) & where to put them.

7. Use your wire cutters to cut the loops off the back to the buttons & press them deeply into the clay.

8. Bend a small piece of wire at a 90º angle, leaving about an1/8” to use to impress the suggestion of bricks in the empty areas of the clay.

9. Using the corner of your blade, gently pop out the buttons & put them aside--after you have cooked your pendant, you will put them back in the impressions you have made & glue them in.

10. Place your pendant on a ceramic tile & bake, at the temperature recommended by the manufacturer of the clay brand that you are using, for 20-30 minutes. Let cool.

At this point, you can either:

11a. Pop out the red background & then use any cyano-acrylate glue to glue it back in the pendant & the buttons back in the impressions you made earlier. Your pendant is now finished. (If you are not going to use the gloss, you may want to use a slightly thicker layer of clay than stated earlier in the directions)

11b. This next step should be done indoors, away from direct sunlight. Directly from the bottle, slowly squeeze in a layer of of Magic-Glos up almost up to the top of your pendant. It will self-level, but you can “help” it by tipping the pendant in different directions to help it flow to the edge. If you have any air bubbles, hit them briefly with the heat gun (not TOO close, or the pressure of the airflow will blow your Glos over the edge of the pendant) & they will pop. Once the Glos is level & there are no air bubbles, prepare a place outside with one of your tiles, either flat on the ground or a table in direct sunlight.

12b. Take your pendant out in the sunlight & place it, with the loop over the edge of the ceramic tile, so that it lays flat. The Glos will begin to harden rapidly, so don’t touch it. Keep in the sun for about 10 minutes. If the sun is not directly above (noon-ish), you may want to turn the pendant & cure for another 10 minutes, if one side of the pendant was casting a shadow into the “well” of the pendant, to be sure that all edges are fully cured. (you can also use a UV light to cure the Magic-Glos indoors, so you can work at night or in bad weather)

12c. The reason I had you make your layer of Glos “almost up to the top of your pendant, is that if you now have any imperfections, you can repeat the above 2 steps and add another layer. The Magic-Glos will even dome if you carefully add more Glos & let it self-level.
